2017 - 5th World Championship of Beer Sommeliers

National competitions

The fifth World Championship of Beer Sommeliers will take place September 10, 2017 at the Munich Convention Center just prior to drinktec, the recognised leader in beverage sector exhibitions. National competitions to determine the field of finalists coming to Munich have been or are being held in the following countries on the following dates:

  • Austria: October 29, 2016
  • Germany: February 11, 2017
  • Switzerland: February 18, 2017
  • Italy: February 20, 2017
  • Brasil: April, 2017
  • Korea: May 25, 2017

Procedure

Participants will be tested and judged during various rounds of competition based on their general and specific knowledge. In the first round, they’ll be expected to complete a theoretical multiple-choice test, correctly answering questions about related topics such as sensor-technology analysis of beer styles, for example. In subsequent rounds of competition, they’ll need to accurately describe various types of beer and how these can be successfully paired with certain meals. They will then need to answer further questions on a topic related to food catering from a consumer’s perspective.

Six hopefuls, having successfully navigated their way through the field in these early rounds („Vorläufe“ and „Hoffnungsläufe“), will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities before a highly decorated jury of world-class beer experts in Munich in September. The finalists will be expected to impress the jury with their comprehensive knowledge on various topics related to beer. The one who is able to persuade the jury most successfully will be crowned World Champion of Beer Sommeliers.
